BAD
BUSINESS CARDS COST A FORTUNE
Example:
Thousands of people pass through Home & Garden shows.
Some go to get ideas for projects they would like to
do. Some go to see what is new and exciting. Vendors
spend thousands of dollars to have a booth at the show
and have their staff standing there for hours on hard
cement floors. Vendors also try and design some method
of getting people to “sign-up” so that they
can get business or successfully market to them. They
spend another ton of money to hand out expensive literature
and brochures. Yet they still shoot themselves
in the foot (with a shotgun) by handing out ineffective
business cards.
Most
people grab one of those free shopping bags and stuff
information into them. Days, weeks or months pass by
before they organize and read the stuff they brought
home.
A
typical home show example: We saw SIX roofing
companies at the show and grabbed stuff from each of
them. Which brochure goes with which card? Oh, one did
staple their business card to the brochure.
Let’s
review our booty from the Home & Garden show bag
and ask the question “Who am I going to TRUST
to do a job that will cost me thousands of dollars and
who will be around if something needs fixed post-installation?”
Business
1:
has a Post Office box address (contact issue)
Business 2: has a cell
phone, no "real" phone (contact issue)
Business 3: has a website
(a positive)
Business 4: their card
was printed from their computer (not really
in business)
Business 5: company president
name in gold foil, address, ph numbers (can we say "ego"
trip - or "expensive"?)
Business 6: full color
professional looking card, background image shows a
roof, has an address, contact numbers, member of the
BBB, gives senior discounts, has a tag line that says
“satisfied customers -- our number one priority”
and a website. (they have invested in their business
and really are "in business")
Reality
Check:
The business cards from businesses 1-5 go in the trash
& business #6 gets the job. Businesses 1-5 wasted
thousands of dollars (and probably should have just
stayed home and watched the ballgame).
The
rather sad TRUTH:
They could have projected the image of success by
spending under $100 for professional looking
full color business cards.
